How music is perceived is totally dependent on the decoder that is built into the listener. If he finds it boring, for instance, it could be that he cannot decode the interesting aspects, the music doesn't match his own experience.

Live Wind Music Space Daily is reporting that sophisticated synthesizers and computer-manipulated recordings are increasingly taking over orchestras. Sounding almost like real players, while costing much less, they're especially popular with provincial or touring companies.

But until mid-July -- when "West Side Story's" producers announced that a synthesizer was replacing three live violinists and two cellists, or half the orchestra's string section in the Broadway production -- staff violinist Paul Woodiel thought that at least the classics would be immune to the trend.

Musically Interesting The Age is reporting that the composers of the Australian classic hit song Down Under will have to hand over a share of earnings from the song for breach of copyright, but the amount they will receive will be much smaller than sought.

EMI and Down Under songwriters Colin Hay and Ron Strykert have been ordered to pay Larrikin 5 per cent of royalties from the song dating back to 2002 and on royalties from future earnings, instead of the 50% claimed by Larrikin.

GWS general information The Grainger Wind Symphony Young Players Scholarship is an initiative launched in 2010 to encourage talented young wind players and percussionists to pursue wind music beyond secondary school.

The Scholarship is awarded on an annual basis to one or more wind, brass or percussionists who have fulfilled the required conditions of the Scholarship. The successful applicant(s) will be judged to have displayed strong technical, musical and ensemble skills appropriate to their instrument, and have demonstrated sound sight-reading skills. Ideally, in addition to the aforementioned, the successful applicant(s) will display an enthusiasm for and appreciation of wind music and a desire to be an active member of the wider wind band scene.
