Music is like a fire in your belly that comes out of your mouth- so you'd better stick an instrument in front of it.

What is a Wind Symphony?

Wind Symphonies (also known as Concert Bands, Symphonic Bands, Wind Bands and Military Bands!) are made up primarily of wind instruments - woodwind and brass - as well as percussion. Where the orchestra uses strings to provide a warmth and depth of sound, Wind Symphonies often use clarinets, although they can change tone colour very readily, as this can just as easily be the saxophones, low brass, even flutes.

Like orchestras of the past, there is no set seating for Wind Symphonies. The Grainger Wind Symphony seating arrangement is pictured below. Click on the instruments to find out more about that instrument's family.

Or click on one of the families of instruments below to learn more about them:

The Conductor Clarinets Trombones
Flutes Saxophones Tubas and Euphoniums
Oboes Trumpets Percussion
Bassoons French Horns
